Juniper Berry
Juniper berry oil is primarily used in the treatment of urinary tract infections such as cystitis and urethritis. It contains an antiseptic volatile oil which can help provide relief to the urinary tract as it passes through. This action is enhanced by a diuretic effect which can help to dilute the urine. The volatile oil component, terpinen-4-ol, may also help to increase the glomerular filtration rate of the kidneys (the rate at which the drainage tubes in the kidney are working). This makes juniper berry oil a valuable addition to this efficient and hard working formula.
Buchu Leaves
Buchu leaves originate in South Africa and are one of the best diuretics known. Buchu leaves are used in treating inflammation of the urethra, blood in the urine, bladder infections, and other urinary tract disorders. Buchu is also said to be an effective remedy for kidney stones, cystitis, and rheumatism. It acts as an anti-inflammatory and helps reduce inflammation of the colon, gums, mucous membranes, prostate, sinuses, and vagina.
It is mostly used for acute and chronic urinary disorders, including inflammation of the urethra, nephritis, cystitis and catarrh of the bladder.
As with most diuretics, Buchu works better if it is taken with cool water. Since it is commonly combined with Uva Ursi, for urinary infections, it is worth noting that neither of these herbs should be subjected to boiling as this dissipates their active principles and volatile oils.
Chamomile
Chamomile, reduces cramping and spastic pain in the bowels and also relieves excessive gas and bloating in the intestines. It is often used to relieve irritable bowel syndrome, nausea, and gastroenteritis (what we usually call stomach flu).
Chamomile is also an excellent calming agent, its relaxing effects do not interfere with activities such as driving a car or completing difficult tasks, as is the case with prescription sedatives. Chamomile is an ideal choice for those with ulcers or other stomach problems aggravated by anxiety. Muscle pain that results from stress and worry is another indication for chamomile. Twitching and tics in muscles may respond to chamomile.
Chamomile is valued as an antimicrobial agent. A German study found that the herb inactivates bacterial toxins. Small quantities of chamomile oil inhibit staphylococcal and streptococcal strains of bacteria. You can drink chamomile tea combined with other antimicrobials, such as thyme, echinacea, and goldenseal, for internal infections. You can use chamomile topically, too, to treat infections and inflammations.
Dog Grass
Dog grass is demulcent, meaning it soothes inflammations of mucosal linings, especially in the urinary tract. It is used in treatment of cystitis, prostatitis, and urethritis, and also to relieve pain of enlarged prostate and kidney stones. Typically used with some combination of Buchu, Corn Silk, Hydrangea, Uva Ursi (bearberry), Yarrow, and/or Cranberries or Cranberry Juice.
Celery
Celery is an excellent source of vitamin C. It is a very good source of dietary fiber, potassium, folate, molybdenum, manganese and vitamin B6. Celery is also a good source of calcium, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, magnesium, vitamin A, phosphorus and iron.
The seeds of celery's wild ancestors, which originated around the Mediterranean, were widely used as a diuretic. Today, we understand how celery, which is rich in both potassium and sodium, the minerals most important for regulating fluid balance, stimulates urine production, thus helping to rid the body of excess fluid.
Uva Ursi
Uva ursi ( Arctostaphylos uva ursi ), also known as bearberry, has a history of medicinal use dating back to the 2nd century. Uva Ursi is used to treat urinary tract infections, cystitis (bladder inflammation), and kidney stones. The hydroquinone derivative, arbutin, is the chief active compound in Uva Ursi. It is absorbed in the stomach and converted into a substance with antimicrobial, astringent, and disinfectant properties. During urination, as it passes out of the body, it acts on the mucus membranes of the urinary tract to soothe irritation, reduce inflammation, and fight infection.
Elderberry
Elderberry (Sambucus nigra) is commonly used as a food product for wine, pie, and jelly. Its leaves were traditionally used for pain relief and applied to wounds to promote healing. Other traditional uses include treatment of infections, skin conditions, and coughing. The active constituents in Elderberry include flavonoids, such as Quercetin, which are believed to be responsible for Elderberry's therapeutic effects. Elderberry, taken several times daily, appears to help flu patients to recover more rapidly. It may also be an effective anti-inflammatory that aids in the treatment of herpes simplex (cold sores) and influenza.
Elder flowers are believed to have mild diuretic action. Elderberry juice, which is made by cooking and pressing the berries, is said to have laxative as well as diuretic properties. Traditional herbalists value it a "wonderful blood purifier."
Golden Rod
Today, Golden Rod is primarily used as an aquaretic agent, meaning that it promotes the loss of water from the body (as compared to a diuretic, which promotes the loss of both water and electrolytes such as salt). It is used frequently in Europe to treat urinary tract inflammation and to prevent or treat kidney stones. In fact, Golden Rod is commonly found in teas to help "flush out" kidney stones and stop inflammatory diseases of the urinary tract.
Laboratory studies have found that active compounds in Golden Rod help reduce inflammation, relieve muscle spasms, fight infections, and lower blood pressure. Some studies also suggest that it may have antioxidant effects.
Cyani
Cyani is a herb used by the Plains Indians for stings, insect bites and snake bites. The properties in Cyani are very close to Blessed Thistle. The water that is distilled from the Cyani petals has been used to treat weak or sore eyes. When Cyani is dried as a powder, it is used to treat bruises. And when the leaves, seeds or distilled water of Cyani is taken in wine, it is said that it is a guard against infectious diseases.
Cyani has been used for ulcers and sores/ulcers in the mouth, conjunctivitis, corneal abrasions, dermatitis, eye problems, gastro-intestinal discomfort, nervous conditions, poisonous bites, insect bites and stings, and toothaches.
Saffron
The medicinal uses of Saffron in the past included its general employment as an antidote against poisoning, a digestant, an aphrodisiac, a tonic, and as a specific for dysentery and measles. Its value has been recognised as an antispasmodic, diaphoretic (profuse perspiration), carminative (prevents formation of or facilitates the expulsion of gas in the gastrointestinal tract), emmenagogic (promoting menstrual discharge) and sedative.
